‘The physician was male however I wasn’t overly involved, I assumed I simply wanted to suck it up and get it sorted,’ Victoria informed ELLE. ‘So I started to inform him [what was wrong] and he interrupted me once I stated I had been on the capsule for seven years….

‘”The problem with girls like you, is that you go on the pill as soon as you become sexually active and that’s where the problems begin,” he stated. His tone of voice was so judgmental; it was fairly clear what he meant.’

His tone of voice was so judgemental. It was fairly clear what he meant.

Shocked, Victoria carried on explaining her considerations and signs. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the top of the shaming.

He continued: ‘So I assume in the event you’re not on the capsule, you are not sexually lively?’

Victoria paused, not sure why he had made an unwelcome assumption about her intercourse life, earlier than she advised him that sure, from time to time, she has informal intercourse.

‘He raised his eyebrows after which requested me about what contraception I was using. Before I might even say the phrase ‘condoms’, he stated: “If you’re having sex, you can get pregnant”. I used to be like: ‘No shit Sherlock!”

The physician was there to advise and inform about her health and physique, nothing extra and nothing much less, so casting aspersions about her intercourse life was unwarranted.

Unfortunately, whereas Victoria’s case is uncommon – nearly all of individuals get invaluable recommendation and care from a reasonably overstretched health service – it isn’t a one-off.

ELLE received in contact with the Everyday Sexism Project – the place women add their experiences of sexism – they usually had loads of examples of slut-shaming by medical professionals.

‘I used to be at a hospital and one of many docs requested me if I used to be sexually lively and I stated no,’ writes one lady. ‘He then proceeded to say: “Good, you do seem like a very nice and good girl, boys will love that.”‘

Another says, ‘I went to the docs as a result of I had a bladder an infection. My physician requested me if I used to be sexually lively. When I stated “no”, he stated I used to be a “spoil sport” and that it was a pity. He is quite a bit older than me, and I felt actually uncomfortable about it.’
