Local colleges say it’s difficult finding female coaches – Sports – The Ledger

“Overall, women are under-represented in all coaching positions, and have limited access to coach men’s teams — the most lucrative positions in college sports,” wrote Nicole M. LaVoi, who works on the University of Minnesota’s Tucker Center for Research on Girls and Women.

When Kevin Jones decides to make a training change, he stated, it’s by no means about wins and losses.

The Warner athletic director seems at different elements — like whether or not this system is assembly college requirements — when he makes modifications.

Right now, Jones wants to rent a head women’s soccer coach, a job that he stated he hopes to fill with the absolute best candidate.

During a time when about 84 % of National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics head coaches are males, Jones has thought lots about hiring a lady. He says he would like to. The drawback has been finding female candidates.

“I don’t know why we get less women. I think it’s the field,” he stated. “I think our pay is competitive, what we’re going to offer. Usually, in the process of application, they won’t know what the salary is. It’s just one of those areas where I would love to have it more diverse.”

Among Polk’s three colleges that compete within the NAIA — Warner, Webber International and Southeastern — gender variety amongst head coaches is missing.

Jones’ athletic division is probably the most numerous with three female head coaches and eight male. Southeastern has two female head coaches and 10 male. Webber, which has had the least employees turnover among the many trio, has two female head coaches throughout 11 sports activities that qualify on the NAIA’s “championship” degree.

Southeastern Athletic Director Drew Watson, a former women’s basketball coach on the faculty, is aware of gender variety is an issue in head teaching roles throughout the nation. But if he’s hiring a head coach, he doesn’t go into the method considering he wants to rent a coach of a selected gender.

“I’ve had the opportunity to hire a women’s volleyball coach, a number of women’s soccer coaches, a couple of women’s basketball coaches, and I can tell you, for me when I look at a coaching opening, I need to find a mission fit — someone who fits,” he stated. “My first thought is mission fit, and right along with that is getting the best person available.”

The NAIA doesn’t mandate that faculties give attention to gender when hiring head coaches — which incorporates Title IX. The NAIA does say that, whereas it defers to the faculties on hiring, it expects that faculties give applicable consideration to individuals of all genders and ethnicity.

Watson and Jones have cited a scarcity of female candidates for open jobs. They stated the pool of potential candidates, historically, has featured extra males than women. Watson may need had “a handful” of women apply for males’s head teaching jobs throughout his six years at Southeastern.

He stated no women utilized for the lads’s basketball or males’s soccer jobs once they got here open.

“Overall, women are under-represented in all coaching positions, and have limited access to coach men’s teams — the most lucrative positions in college sports,” wrote Nicole M. LaVoi, who works on the University of Minnesota’s Tucker Center for Research on Girls and Women.

LaVoi serves on the board for the Alliance of Women Coaches, and wrote on teaching inequality within the Big Ten in 2013. She discovered that women, whereas beneath-appreciated within the teaching realm general, have restricted entry to some jobs.

“There are many, many reasons why this is happening, but in the big picture, big score of things, it really has to do with systemic bias in college athletics,” LaVoi stated. “There are not any athletic administrators which are going to speak about acutely aware bias, however all of us have unconscious bias.

“When athletic directors say, ‘I just want to hire the best coach,’ that already privileges men because of gender bias.”

Bill Heath, the athletic director at Webber International, is aware of his division lacks variety.

“I’m sure we will not even it out, but make all efforts here to have female coaches coaching female teams,” he stated. “I think we’ll close the gap further as we move forward here. That’s been a topic of conversation that we need to have more female coaches with our female teams.”

For Heath, the difficulty has been much less about female candidates — “We’ve tried and it hasn’t worked,” he says — and extra about compensation.

“We’ve tried to hire females, but … for the salaries we offer, we haven’t been able to get them,” he stated.

According to the Equity in Athletics Data Analysis database, the typical head coach wage amongst head coaches in any respect three of Polk’s NAIA packages through the 2014-15 athletic season was $31,624. The distinction turns into extra noticeable if you break it down by males’s and women’s packages.

The common head teaching wage for males’s sports activities was $37,473, whereas the typical wage for a coach, male or female, working in the identical place with a women’s program was simply $25,776. As personal colleges, the faculties aren’t required by regulation to make their teaching salaries open to the general public.

Unlike the NAIA trio, Florida Southern operates as a non-soccer faculty competing on the NCAA Division II degree.

Ten of the 15 head coaches at Florida Southern are males. According to the EADA, the typical wage of a head coach in a males’s sport on the faculty was $49,544 whereas the typical wage for a head coach of a women’s sport was $48,411 — simply $1,333 distinction.

LaVoi, in addition to every athletic director, agreed that head soccer coaches’ salaries skew the typical.

Those NAIA numbers are additionally barely askew due to Warner’s system. Outside of soccer coach Rod Shafer and indoor/outside monitor and cross nation coach Emperatriz Gonzalez-Henao, each coach at Warner throughout that point was a college worker first. That means solely a fraction of their wage comes from teaching.

“What I’m learning in all of this is the athletic directors have to be very intentional and say ‘I want to hire a female to coach my women,’” LaVoi stated. “ ‘I’m going to go out and actively recruit, pick up the phone and see who is out there and convince them to apply.’ They have to be very intentional.”

Between Webber and Southeastern — the 2 faculties that featured full-time coaches throughout the board — the typical males’s head teaching wage is $42,843 for males’s coaches and $30,477 for women’s head coaches.

“When we look at salaries, we don’t look at whether they’re male or female. We look at experience. We look at what the sport pays on a general basis across the board at our level,” Watson stated. “I can guarantee you that the difference with our salaries — men’s and women’s — is not because of gender.”

Watson added, “like any small college in the country, if you take the head football coach’s salary out of the equation, the salaries for male and female head coaches at Southeastern would be roughly equal.”

The strategy to hires varies among the many faculties. Warner and Southeastern fish from a unique pool of candidates than Webber as a liberal arts colleges based mostly on Christian beliefs. But that doesn’t change the truth that the one scholarship sports activities coached by extra women than males are women’s volleyball, lacrosse and softball.

“I do look at diversity, whether it’s racial or male (or) female,” Jones stated. “I feel that there are challenges in case you’re a male teaching a female sport that you simply don’t actually take into consideration. Coaching males, I can go within the locker room and have that impression. With women, you simply can’t do this.

“There are some things that are just barriers that you just have to overcome.”
