Earlier this week, actress Demi Moore appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to promote her newest flick, ‘Rough Night’. During their dialog, she revealed one thing fairly scary: she misplaced each of her entrance tooth and credit score it to stress.
Um, uh oh.
“I sheared off my front teeth. And I’d love to say it was skateboarding or something really cool, but I think it’s really something that’s important to share,” she advised the viewers, then defined that she thinks it was due to stress. “But in an effort to get ready for you, I wanted to make sure that my teeth were in,” she joked.
She’s clearly had the tooth repaired, however the notion that stress could lead on to tooth loss leaves us with so many query. SELF spoke with Tim Pruett, D.M.D. who weighed in on the idea saying, “It’s not common when viewed from a short-term perspective of, ‘I’m stressed, OMG, I’m going to lose my front tooth. However, over time, chronic stress can be a trigger mechanism for clinching and grinding—what we call parafunctional bruxism—and can definitely cause significant damage to your teeth and gums, [even becoming a contributing] factor in tooth loss.”
He added, “As in most cases,” he says, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!”
Moral of the story: get to the dentist asap when you discover these indicators.
